Compression garments are restrictive pieces of clothing that have been known to aid in recovery after invasive surgery. They come in a variety of sizes and styles and can be worn around the waist, thighs, calves, and torso. Compression garments are worn by many athletes because of their ability to reduce the risk of injury and increase athletic performance. By speeding up the blood flow, the garments decrease the risk of blood clots and reduce swelling, which is very important after surgery. The restrictive material can also help ease pain from sudden uncomfortable movements such as coughing or sneezing.

It is very important for liposuction and tummy tuck patients to wear these garments in order to maintain optimum results. This is especially true if liposuction was performed on a large area of the body. Wearing the garments will prevent fluid shifts and help your body conform to it’s new underlying shape. Most patients find that they feel better while wearing compression garments, and they can be worn less as the body heals. Maximum contraction of the skin is accomplished with these garments, which prevents unwanted folds or creases, helps tighten the skin, stimulates better blood and fluid circulation, and reduces swelling and bruising. These garments are also known to lower the risk of a mass or swelling caused by fluid accumulation, known as “seroma.”

Breast surgery patients should wear a compression bra for the first two weeks following surgery in order to maintain the new breast shape and, if augmentation was performed, to hold the implant in place. The bra should be worn even while sleeping to enhance comfort and to advance the healing process.
