Many potential patients come in for a plastic surgery consultation without having a clear idea of what they want.
“What plastic surgery do I need?” is a common question asked during these consultations.
While some patients benefit from a single procedure, many patients are better suited for a combination procedure.
A combination procedure means performing two different but neighboring cosmetic surgeries at the same time to cut down on money, and discomfort, and the number of procedures while enhancing the quality of results.
What Are the Most Popular Combination Procedures?
The most popular combination procedures are breast augmentation and breast lift, liposuction and tummy tuck, blepharoplasty and brow lift, and a Mommy Makeover.
Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift
Many women turn to breast augmentation after pregnancy because the process has resulted in deflated breasts.
While breast augmentation can address the loss of volume and shape, it does not always resolve the sagging that develops following nursing children.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding stretch and weaken the tissue, causing premature breast sagging.
This sagging is treated through a breast lift that removes excess skin, raises the aureolae and tightens the tissues.
Liposuction and Tummy Tuck
Liposuction addresses unwanted fat deposits; tummy tuck surgery addresses skin and muscle laxity.
While tummy tuck surgery typically removes the excess fat that is on the lower abdomen, it does not address excess fat on the neighboring areas like the hips, flanks, thighs, or upper abdomen.
Combining liposuction with a tummy tuck allows the patient to achieve improved body contouring of the midsection.
Blepharoplasty and Brow Lift
The areas around the eyes are among the first to show visible aging. This often results in the appearance of hooded upper eyelids.
Hooded eyelids are usually treated through blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, as this procedure removes excess skin and underlying fat on the eyelids themselves.
Unfortunately, excess skin and pockets of fat are not the only culprits that cause hooded eyes.
Sagging brows, created by the aging in the forehead, are also responsible for this hooding.
Patients who choose to undergo blepharoplasty for the upper eyelids may achieve lackluster results if their sagging brows are not lifted and tightened with a brow lift.
Mommy Makeover surgery is a combined body contouring procedure designed for mothers who have experienced physical aesthetic changes after pregnancy and childbirth.
Mommy Makeover surgery is tailored to the individual and can include any surgical procedure; however, a breast lift or augmentation with liposuction and a tummy tuck is frequently chosen.
What Are the Benefits of a Combined Procedure?
The benefits of a combined procedure are more dramatic results, shorter recovery and downtime, and reduced cost.
More Dramatic Results
Many patients ask whether or not it is safe to have multiple plastic surgeries at the same time.
Safety and good outcomes are paramount for every patient. Each patient receives a health assessment. Not all patients have the same degree of health and this must be taken into account, however, combining procedures will usually enhance the quality of your results.
In other words, combining procedures allows the results of one procedure to complement the results of another. If one’s chest is remarkably more youthful in appearance and the tummy, not, there is a perceived “miss-match” of age of the same torso.
This ensures aesthetic balance in the general body region—whether it be the face, breasts, or midsection, which creates a more natural-looking result.
Treating the concerns in one area of the face when there are problems present in multiple places can backfire because it highlights the untreated concern.
Combination procedures enable the surgeon to address the entire region and not just a specific section. Furthermore, tissue from one region can often be harvested and then relocated as a graph to another area such as fat injections to the cheeks or dermal grafting to the lips.
Shorter Recovery and Downtime
Plastic surgery recoveries can be both physically and emotionally taxing. So, it is best to experience the recoveries all at the same time.
The discomfort felt with one procedure is not vastly different from the discomfort felt with multiple, and you will be prescribed pain medication that will soothe all operated areas.
Plastic surgery cost is one of the top factors that individuals search before undergoing a procedure.
Finances are a significant concern for many people, especially if they are considering multiple procedures.
While individuals might assume that it is financially beneficial to spread the treatments out (since one may continually save for the treatments), performing surgical procedures at separate times is not the most cost-effective option.
Combining procedures not only decreases the number of recovery periods but it also helps with your the number of “time off work.” Even though the initial cost will be higher if you are undergoing multiple procedures, the combined price will be far lower than if you had the surgeries separately.
This is because you are only paying for one day of a facility fee, one round of anesthesia, one prescription of pain medication, and one set of post-surgical dressings and one leave from work.
Not all cosmetic procedures can be combined with another.
Traditionally, procedures can be performed together if they are focusing on the same general body region.
During your consultation, Dr. Hiatt will let you know which procedures can be combined and which are best suited for a separate day.
