Handsome man smiling looking very happyFor decades, the desire for plastic surgery was dominated by high class celebrities and females in order to attain a more attractive physical appearance. During those years, many males avoided undergoing any form of cosmetic treatment, because it wasn’t “manly” to do so. However, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of men having plastic surgery, accounting for almost 10 percent of all procedures performed over the past few years.

There are variety of reasons that more men are choosing to undergo surgery, but the most common, include:

  • To look as young as their partner
  • To stay relevant in a growing job market
  • To increase self confidence

Using the most recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) the top five male cosmetic procedures that were performed in 2012 were:

1. Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty) 62,000

Men undergoing rhinoplasty surgery are typically looking to attain a more aesthetically pleasing nose by reducing the size, width, and nasal openings. They may also want to change the profile of the nose by eliminating bumps and depressions on the bridge of the nose.

2. Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) 29,000

Blepharoplasty is chosen by many men to restore a more alert appearance to the eyes by treating excess tissue and fat deposits from the upper and lower eyelids. In some instances, blepharoplasty will improve the person’s field of vision.

3. Liposuction 23,000

Men usually undergo liposuction on their stomach area to get rid of fat deposits (i.e, “love handles,” “spare tire,” etc.) and achieve a slimmer, more defined abdomen. Liposuction may also be desired to eliminate fatty tissue that exists under the chin to acquire a thinner and more contoured face.

Liposuction is not intended to be a form of weight loss.

4. Gynecomastia Surgery (Male Breast Reduction) 21,000

Gynecomastia surgery is becoming more popular among men of all ages, although males should be finished with puberty before undergoing this procedure. By excising glandular tissue and removing excess fat with liposuction, men are able to achieve a more muscular, contoured chest.

5. Facelift 12,000

Men who undergo facelift surgery usually want to reduce the appearance of sagging skin and wrinkles so they can look as young as they feel. Dr. Hiatt recommends the deep plane facelift, which involves not only altering facial skin and fat, but also the underlying fascia, or connective tissue of the face, which results in a natural, more youthful appearance.
