Male child with his hands on his his earsEven though our ears continue to change somewhat throughout our lifetime, their basic shape is usually evident at a very young age. Ears have reached about 85% of their adult size by age five. This means that if the ears are already disproportionate, large, or protruding by this point, they will likely always look that way.

The appearance of prominent ears garner unwanted attention and can have a negative impact on a person’s confidence, which can be more devastating for kids. Often the subject of bullying, the appearance of prominent ears often brings on comments by children that are harsh and sometimes hurtful. To eliminate deformities and restore a normal appearance to the ears, Dr. Hiatt performs otoplasty at his Mesa, Arizona practice.

Otoplasty can effectively improve one or more of the following conditions:

  • Overly developed ears

  • Protruding ears

  • Deformed ears as a result of trauma

  • Unsatisfactory results from a previous procedure

  • Correction of earlobes following the removal of gauges

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that Dr. Hiatt performs at his state-of-the-art plastic surgery practice using either local anesthesia and IV sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Hiatt makes incisions inside and behind the ears to keep the scars hidden. He then removes any excess cartilage and reshapes the ears. If the ears are protruding, Dr. Hiatt pins the ears closer to the head and closes the incisions with sutures. The entire procedure takes about two hours to complete.

Although many adults are choosing this cosmetic procedure, more and more teenagers and children are also undergoing this surgery. Otoplasty is a safe and effective procedure for individuals who are at least five years of age and free of any significant medical problems.

The goal with otoplasty is to make the ears un-noticed. It is a plastic surgical procedure done with the idea of being less noticed as opposed to enhanced.
