Woman pinching side fat

Sometimes eating healthy and exercising regularly is not enough to help you maintain or attain a healthy physique; some areas on the body may be resistant to these natural weight loss methods. Unfortunately both men and women deal with stubborn fatty areas that do not respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction (“lipoplasty”) is a popular and effective surgical procedure that removes fatty deposits from troublesome areas, such as the knees, thighs, chin, hips, and abdomen. If you are considering receiving liposuction, it is important to seek a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Liposuction is performed by inserting a suction tube (cannula) into a fatty area on the body, through a tiny incision. The particular lipoplasty technique(s) used for your procedure will be based on multiple factors, such as the areas being treated, aesthetic needs, and Dr. Hiatt’s recommendation.

When appropriate, ultrasound or power-assist devices are sometimes utilized in conjunction with the tumescent technique. The tumescent liposuction method is regarded as the safest and most commonly used form of liposuction today. It involves the injection of a large volume of dilute solution of local anesthesia (lidocaine and epinephrine) into the fat beneath the skin before suctioning it. The local anesthetic lidocaine in the tumescent solution provides complete local anesthesia, eliminating the need for general anesthesia or IV sedation. In addition tumescent liposuction reduces bleeding during surgery and allows for a faster recovery time. This technique also offers patients a more comfortable fat reduction procedure versus the old, traditional form of liposuction.

In general, liposuction takes about one to three hours, depending on how extensive the surgery is. Bruising and swelling will resolve gradually, and patients typically return to work within one week.

When it comes to liposuction, everyone has different needs. During a consultation, you can share your cosmetic goals with Dr. Hiatt. He will determine if liposuction is right for your body, and which procedure will work best to get you the results you are aiming for.
