Either liposuction or tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery are sought after by both men and women to achieve a more slender contour to the midsection. Patients who consider these procedures are typically over the age of 30, maintain a healthy body weight, are finished having children, and have difficulty getting rid of the excess fat or excess skin in their stomach area.
Although both procedures provide a sculpted contour to the abdomen, each has different advantages and disadvantages for certain body types. During your consultation at his Mesa, Arizona practice, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Karl B. Hiatt can help you determine the procedure that will best meet your needs.
Liposuction for the Abdomen
Liposuction can effectively reduce excess fat in the abdomen, but it will not reduce excess skin or remove stretch marks. Once the fat is removed with liposuction, the abdominal skin will need to adjust and adhere to the new body contour. Surgical compression garments worn in the weeks following surgery will help to reduce swelling and help the waist conform to its new sculpted shape, but if the skin has poor elasticity, the patient may be left with a “deflated,” saggy appearance. For patients who have too much skin or poor elasticity in the abdomen, Dr. Hiatt will likely recommend abdominoplasty.
Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty
During tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Hiatt will sculpt the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin and tightening the abdominal muscles. Because of this added sculpting technique, abdominoplasty is especially beneficial to women who have weakened or stretched abdominal muscles that have resulted from pregnancy. Since the tummy tuck involves excision, it is also the best procedure for those who have poor skin elasticity and/or sagging abdominal skin. Stretch marks can also be removed with a tummy tuck if they fall in line with the skin that is to be excised. Although this procedure results in a scar, it can usually be hidden beneath most styles of swimsuits and underwear.
Liposuction and abdominoplasty are often combined to provide optimal results. Many women who are also interested in breast enhancement opt for the Mommy Makeover procedure, which involves a combination of procedures that target the areas of the body affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding. The Mommy Makeover will be customized for each patient depending on her needs and expectations for the procedure.
