Among so many of us today is a realization that hair tends to grow in “unwanted” or “unusual” places, including facial hair, chest, abdomen, underarms or bikini line.  Shaving can cause rashes or even bumps with ingrown hair in both men and women.  Thankfully with advanced technology, laser hair removal is an effective option to permanently remove the unwanted hair, eliminate razor rash or ingrown hair that may cause infections and pimples.

At Dr. Hiatt’s plastic surgery practice in Mesa, Arizona, this cosmetic laser hair removal treatment is available. In fact, Dr. Hiatt is the first doctor to offer this technique in the Valley. With the IPL and Diode Laser, using this technology, one can successfully eliminate the presence of unwanted hair. The safe and effective laser removes the hair by destroying the hair follicle with a combination of light and energy. The highly concentrated light targets only the pigmented hair follicle without damaging the skin.

The technology behind laser hair reduction is quite phenomenal; the laser directs its beam energy at hair follicles that are in their active growth phase. The invisible laser destroys the hair on-site, with minimal effect to the surrounding skin. Because the laser specifically targets hair that is in its active growth phase, only those hairs respond to the treatments.  Optimal results may require 3 treatments or more.

Many patients report feeling a slight stinging or burning sensation, such as a rubber band snapping the skin. A topical anesthetic may be applied prior to the procedure in order to numb the treatment area and lessen any discomfort. The size of the area determines the length of the procedure; the larger area, the more time it takes to treat. Following the treatment an ointment or lotion may be applied to keep the area moisturized.

As with any procedure, there are potential risks and complications with laser hair removal. Although it is rare, patients may experience redness, dryness, or flaky skin. During the immediate post treatment time period it is important to avoid sun exposure.

You may not notice much of a difference in the look and feel of your treated skin immediately. However, over the next few weeks, hair will start shedding. It is recommended that the patient avoids strenuous activity or exercise for about 24 hours after treatment, however, most patients may return to their normal routine on the same day as their treatment.
