When it comes to breast augmentation (“augmentation mammaplasty”or “breast enhancement surgery”), one of the most common questions that people ask is: Which implant is better – silicone or saline? Both types of breast implants have been regarded as safe and effective by the FDA.   However, there are differences to consider prior to making your final decision.  There may be one that is better suited for your individual needs and desires.

Silicone implants feel more like natural breast tissue in comparison to saline implants, which typically have a firmer feel. For many there is little difference between silicone and saline-enhanced breasts. Some patients have complained that their saline implants have visible wrinkling or rippling. However, if the implant is placed under the pectoral muscle or if the patient’s natural breast tissue or overlying skin is thicker, the wrinkles or ripples are less apparent. Some women do not want the potential rippled look and opt for silicone implants to minimize it.

One difference between saline and silicone implants is in the augmentation procedure itself; saline implants are inserted relatively empty and then filled with saline – a salt water solution – upon insertion. This allows Dr. Hiatt to measure the preferred size of the breast once it is placed and make adjustments to size, and adjust for asymmetries. Silicone implants, on the other hand, come pre-filled, so a slightly larger incision is needed for insertion. This difference plays a minor factor among most women because the scar is nearly imperceptible in either case. Temporary sizers are used if there is a question of symmetry so adjustments can be made prior to placement of the implants at the time of surgery.  Both saline and silicone implants can be inserted through the crease under the breasts, which Dr. Hiatt feels provides the best implant symmetry, contour and overall result.
