Liposuction is meant to “fine tune” the contours of the body and remove fat from stubborn areas like the abdomen and thighs. Other common areas for liposuction include the calves, ankles, arms, and knees. The typical liposuction candidate is unable to lose fat from these areas with diet and exercise. Since liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure, many often wonder if the results will long lasting. Generally, the answer is yes.  A key phrase to remember is “liposuction is for improving contour and not for losing weight”.

When liposuction is performed, fat cells are permanently removed from the body. If the patient gains weight, the weight may be distributed differently. Typically, if a patient gains a significant amount of weight, their body shape will simply be a larger version of their new shape. If weight gain is likely post-operatively then liposuction may not be your best option.

If you do not gain weight after liposuction, fat will not appear in the treated areas; however, age also plays a factor in determining lasting results. Over time, your skin will gain laxity, and sagging may develop. Keep in mind that liposuction surgery is actually not the best procedure if you would like to get rid of sagging skin or if your skin is already very lax. In fact, liposuction can make the skin appear even looser after the procedure since it removes fat but does not pull the skin tight like a tummy tuck. Many women who are done having children have experienced great results with liposuction on their abdomen, although a tummy tuck would be more appropriate for women with significant amounts of excess skin. Women who are deciding between the two should also note that liposuction is less invasive than a tummy tuck, and scarring is also significantly less noticeable with liposuction.

Patients should know that not only can loose skin and weight maintenance affect the outcome of a procedure, but genetics and the ability of your surgeon can also have an impact.
