For some people, large and protruding ears have been a problem since early childhood. For children, protruding ears can be a source of ridicule and teasing. The otoplasty outpatient procedure can correct this problem.
Otoplasty (ear pinning) is a procedure performed to reduce the protrusion of the ear. It brings the ears back closer to the head and creates the folds that are sometimes missing. Although many people feel that plastic surgery is done for vanity, in reality, otoplasty is done simply to normalize ones appearance so their ears stand out less.
Otoplasty surgery can be performed when the ears are fully grown by age 4.
Ears that are prominent are treated by removing excess cartilage and creating natural folds. Incisions are made inside the ear and behind the ear in order to keep the scars hidden. The goal is to make the ears unnoticed. Recovery time for otoplasty surgery is minimal although bruising often takes several days to completely disappear. The procedure takes about 2 hours to perform and is done as an outpatient. Anesthesia is either local with sedation or general. Otoplasty in children is best performed after the age of 5.
